FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Israelis Call Procter and Gamble’s Bluff
Iams’ Lawyers Mislead the Public

Mill Valley, CA…In response to a threatening letter from the Iams company – a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble (P&G) – Israeli animal rights activists published an advertisement exposing P&G’s ongoing policy of conducting cruel and unnecessary product tests on animals. The ad, entitled "The Truth Behind Procter & Gamble Products," was published in the Sunday edition of the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz. The Israeli Society for the Abolition of Vivisection (Israel), Uncaged (United Kingdom) and In Defense of Animals (USA) jointly sponsored the ad.

The Israeli Society for the Abolition of Vivisection (ISAV) felt compelled to expose the truth behind P&G’s policies after receiving a letter from the lawyers representing Iams who claimed that P&G’s policy "is against product safety testing and any other form of experiments on animals." However, P&G’s web site readily shows that they, in fact, conduct experiments on animals. Furthermore, in a letter to In Defense of Animals (IDA), P&G officials claimed that the letter written by Iams’ lawyers contained incorrect information and that it was never approved by P&G.

"Once again, we see spokespersons not knowing what P&G is doing and basically saying what they know the public wants to hear, that animals are not being tortured," said Rick Bogle of IDA. "We believe that the attorneys for Iams will have to make a public pronouncement when the ad is released, stating that they disseminated incorrect information, and P&G will be forced to admit, once again, that they still torture and kill animals in order to make a new shade of makeup or new type of shampoo."

In the course of "product safety testing" done by P&G, caustic chemicals are forced into the eyes of rabbits; and rats, guinea pigs, and hamsters are forced to swallow various chemicals and new substances are rubbed on their shaved skin. Even though the law does not require these tests, P&G refuses to join the over 600 international companies that develop their products without using animals.

The Israeli activists are calling for the Israeli public to boycott Procter & Gamble products and its subsidiaries: Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Tampax, Always, Ariel, Pampers, Pringles, Iams, and Eukanuba.
