Graphic Billboard Depicts Animal Suffering in Laboratories of Procter & Gamble

Detroit, MI – A graphic billboard that reads “Stop Animal Torture: Boycott Procter & Gamble,” and features graphic photos of rabbits suffering in laboratories, has been erected on the corner of Lodge Freeway and Wyoming Road to educate Detroit-area motorists about the continued animal suffering, abuse and torture in Procter & Gamble laboratories.

The billboard is part of an international boycott of Procter & Gamble (P&G) and is being jointly sponsored by In Defense of Animals (IDA) and Animals Deserve Adequate Protection Today and Tomorrow (ADAPTT).

“This billboard depicts just a tiny amount of the torture that is unnecessarily inflicted on animals in P&G’s laboratories,” said IDA President, Elliot Katz, DVM. “It will help to shine some light on P&G’s continued animal torture and help to educate consumers about the callousness and insensitivity that goes into every one of P&G’s products.”

Although not required by law, P&G continues to use thousands of rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, mice and rats each year in its cosmetic and household product testing. Despite a twelve-year international boycott, P&G still refuses to join the over 500 companies who have chosen to be cruelty-free by not testing any of their products on animals.

“Every time people purchase Tide, Bounce, Pantene, Crest or Tampax or any one of the hundreds of other P&G products they are supporting and condoning vile, painful and unnecessary experiments on rabbits, dogs, monkeys and mice,” said Gary Yourofsky, President of ADAPTT. “Consumers must take a stand against injustice and stop buying P&G’s products until they stop these torturous and needless experiments on animals.”

“For a number of years we have been trying to place similar advertisements around the country, but because of P&G's multi-million dollar advertising budget, there has been a virtual media blackout on our efforts to expose P&G's cruelty,” said Dr. Katz. “This billboard marks a breakthrough in our efforts to educate the public.”

In Defense of Animals, located in Mill Valley, CA, is a national, animal protection organization dedicated to ending the abuse and exploitation of animals by protecting their rights, welfare and habitats.

ADAPTT, based in Royal Oak, MI, was established to assist in the abolition of animal use in medical research, product testing, circuses, rodeo, and other forms of “entertainment.”
